It is the month where we celebrate how far we, as a community, have come, and it is also a reminder of how far we still have yet to go for acceptance and equality. "Being someone who lives as an LGBTQ+ individual, the celebration of Pride essentially provides acknowledgement and support, not just from allies to LGBTQ+, but from individuals to each other. The celebration of Pride holds a lot of meaning for Nicole. Outside of work Nicole enjoys hiking, playing music, learning new skills, and travel that is not work-related. She said, "I also like that we have the responsibility to ask the questions and do the research that helps DEC achieve its mission." Nicole finds the best thing about working at DEC is being able to work alongside people who share the same passions and goals, which she finds very rewarding. Nicole has a bachelor's degree in wildlife management from SUNY Cobleskill and a master's in geographic information science from the University at Albany. She had previously worked at the NYS Department of Health. She officially joined the team in July 2021. Nicole Campbell is getting ready to celebrate her first anniversary as an avian biologist in the wildlife diversity section, bureau of wildlife in the Division of Fish and Wildlife at DEC. One way to celebrate with us is Get Outdoors & Get Together Day on Saturday, June 11. In June, we celebrate both Pride Month and Get Outdoors Month. Several of our staff members are profiled below and show how they are living unapologetically and in solidarity throughout their communities. DEC invites all staff to celebrate each person's story and provide support so every person can feel happy, healthy, and safe.ĭEC is proud to celebrate our LGBTQIA+ teammates, whose contributions advance our environmental protections and advocacy as well as the greater human experience. These people can be called allies, advocates, or even accomplices. One important aspect of Pride is the participation of those in the community who do not identify as queer or LGBTQIA+ but stand shoulder-to-shoulder with others in the struggle for equality and inclusion for all. Honoring Pride is about more than displaying rainbow flags, marching in parades, or even purchasing Pride-themed merchandise. Both themes acknowledge the continued struggle and the ongoing resilience of the LGBTQIA+ community.
